Hope you like it!

Chapter 1: It Starts Again.

It was a slightly beat-up-looking 2015 chevy pickup truck (it could use a good wash) but for Sam, it did the job. The wind-blown through his brown hair as his left hand lightly pounds the steering wheel. His head started bobbing to his Spotify playlist with the words to My Kind Of Party by Jason Aldean flowing out of his mouth: “At the bottom of a real tall cold drink/Chillin’ with some Skynyrd and some old Hank/Let’s get this thing started/It’s my kinda party.”

Sam takes a right-hand turn into the parking lot of William McKinley Regional High School for The Performing Arts. He has been the coach of the New Directions show choir competition team since 2015; the last year his varsity team won Nationals. As he parks his car he takes a deep breath.

“Good Morning Coach Evans!” could be heard as Sam get out of his car.

“Hey Logan, Don’t forget Glee club at 3:15” He replies.

“Hey Sam” William Schuester, Principal of WMHS, says as he catches up to Sam.

“Oh Hey, Mr. Schue” Sam replies.

“Uh, look I need to meet with you this afternoon can you stop by my office after lunch?” Will states as the two walk through the doors.

“Oh yeah sure, is something wrong?” Sam asks.

“Um, don’t worry,” Will says as he pats Sam on the shoulder as goes right to go to his office.

Sam is worried though. It’s been seven years since any show choir team has won a major competition at this school. That is all that can go through his head as he watches Will Schuester walk away.

“Well, well. Mr. Sam Evans, I thought after all those losses you would be gone by now” Sam smirks as he turns around.

“Good Morning to you too Ms. Washington” Sam replies.

“That is Coach Washington to you young man” She snarks back sarcastically “I can’t say the same for you though, not for much longer at least.”

“Um, what?” he says befuddled.

“You haven’t heard?” She says with wide eyes. “Your group of uncoordinated underperformers isn’t long for this school” as she continues the snark. “Unlike my Cheerios who have won their national dance competitions for the last seven years.” Sam looks at her with concern.

“If I was you, I would look into a new career.” She says before she walks away. All Sam can see is Coach Roz Washington’s red tracksuit walk through the doors of Will’s office. The concern still lingers on his face as he stands in the hallway, frozen, as the kids are shuffling in around him.

“RING, RING, RING” the morning bell breaks him out of his trance. “I need to fix this,” He says to himself. Same runs to the choir room. He looks over to his left and sees all the trophies in the case; his formative years twinkling before his eyes. the words “2012 National Champions” grabs his attention. At this point, he knows what he needs to do. He pulls out his phone and sends a single text: Glee Club Needs Help.

Sam’s morning goes on somewhat uneventfully but with much haste. A lot of text messages, phone calls, and emails have been conducted. Amidst the stress, he loses track of time. “Excuse me, Coach Evans?” a voice is heard to the right of Sam. “Principal Schuester is waiting for you in his office.” A student says as Sam snaps out of his immersive state, he quickly looks at the time on his computer. It says 12:15. “Oh crap, uh, um, thank you!” he says as he stands up to leave. The student chuckles a little and walks away.

Sam is showing some signs of anxiety as he walks toward Will’s office. He takes a deep breath as he opens the door. “Hey Sam, please forgive the formality of this meeting.” Will states.

“Uh yeah, ok.” Same replies.

“So I am just going to cut to the chase, ok. The school district and I have been going back and forth on funding. They don’t think show choir is an important part of the performing arts curriculum. They wanted to cut funding for it…”

“Mr. Schue you can’t do that!” Sam says with astonishment Will holds up his right hand signaling Sam to let him finish. “Because this school has been underperforming in some aspects of competition and academia I was forced to reallocate most of the budget” Will explains as Sam’s look of despair grows deeper.

“Luckily,” Will states. “I was able to convince them to keep one Show Choir funded.”

“Oh My God That’s great! Sam says with some excitement.

“Don’t get excited just yet Sam” Will stated bemoaningly. “your budget is only half of what it was. And I’m afraid if you don’t place high this year it may be it for Glee.” Sam takes a deep breath.

“Look, Sam,” Will says as he stands up and sits next to Sam. “I gave you this Glee club because I believed in you then and I still believe in you now. You can do this.”

“Thanks, Mr. Schue. Glee Club means a lot to me. What do I need to do?” Sam asks.

“Honestly it’s going to be hard and I am not sure how much I can help,” Will says. “If I were still coaching I would start over. Go back to the root of the team.”

“The root of the team. Yeah. Thanks, Mr. Schue” Sam says as he gets up and starts to leave.

“Again, call me Will!” Will states as Sam is walking out.

“Ok. Mr. Schue” Sam replies loudly as he briskly leaves. Will chuckles and shakes his head while Sam exits the office.

Sam pulls out his phone and texts: Confirmed. He rubs his temple with his left hand as he takes another deep breath. He heads back to his office to prepare what needs to be done to save the glee club. He continues to send texts, emails, and some phone calls for the remained of the school day. As the choir room starts to fill up, with all the teams, he walks in front of the board and says to them “Glee Club is over.”

Gasps can muffled talking start to occur. “Look, Look,” he says as he moves his hands up and down to settle the kids. “Honestly, the show choir budget has been severely cut. There is only enough funding for one team now” he explains to the kids with despair. The looks on all the kid’s faces show sorrow and frustration.

“The plan is to create a newer New Directions,” he says to the group as the murmurs start again. “I have a sign-up sheet for auditions on the piano.”

“Wait. We have to reaudition.” One student snaps.

“Yes. We are starting over. Honestly, it’s going to be a lot of work. More than what many of you are used to” He explains as he starts to sit down on a stool. He continues to state that “Rebuilding requires a lot of dedication and heart. I know every single one of you is capable of that.” As he glances over all the faces of the kids in the choir room he notices a variety of emotions. “I understand that this is hard. That all of you are feeling multiple emotions all at once and that’s ok. You have every right to feel how you feel. I hope to see all of you in the auditorium” he says as he stands up from the stool. “I’m sorry that all of you have to go through this and I promise you that I will do everything I can to save this team.” Sam walks over to the piano and takes the pen out of his shirt pocket and places it on the sign-up sheet as he exits.

The students stand up. Some leave the room right away. One student walks over to the piano and writes his name. Sam watches from his office as the student puts the pen down and leaves. A smile crosses his face as he sees one more student write on the paper. Sam takes a deep relaxed breath. His phone dings from an incoming text message. The screen states “6pm Zoom” from Blaine Anderson-Hummel. His left-hand raises in a fist as he shakes it with excitement. The last student leaves the choir room. Sam gets up collects the papers and turns the lights off for the day; the lights for the school start to turn off with his steps as walks out of the school.

As Sam closes the door he looks at the sign-up sheet. He knew that show choir wasn’t as popular as it use to be. He looks over the list and counts only eight names; it is a variety from across all the groups. As he turns his car on a familiar sound starts to play. “I did it all/ I owned every second that this world could give/ I saw so many places/ The things that I did/ Yeah, with every broken bone/I swear I lived” the lyrics made him smile, and continued to give him hope as he drove home.

“Well if hearing ‘I lived’ by One Republic wasn’t a sign, I don’t know what is,” the voice said coming from Sam’s tablet.

“I know but only eight kids signed up Blaine” Sam continued.

“So? When Mr. Schue started Glee Club he only had four kids audition and look how far he got” Kurt explained.

“Wait what does One Republic have to do with being a sign?” Tina chimed in.

“Oh, others are joining the chat,” Kurt says excitedly as Blaine chuckles and explains “It was the song everyone sang two years ago when the auditorium was dedicated to Finn remember.”

“Oh yeah.” She states as more people join the zoom call. We see Mike Chang, Mercedes, Kitty, and Brittany pop up as she continues to state “Sorry Sam, Arty can’t make it he said he had some editing to do on his latest documentary.”

“That’s ok Tina” Same replies.

“Yeah Santana has an appearance right now so she can’t make the call but I’ve already told her what’s going on” Brittany explains.

“Quinn is busy with her non-profit banquet but she said to let her know what the consensus is” Kitty stated.

“It’s all good. I know everyone is super busy” Sam explains as Rachel and Jesse join in with waves.

“Hey! Looks like we are all here now” Sam says excitedly.

“Oh, it’s so good to see everyone’s faces. It’s been so long” Rachel says with her hand on her heart. As Jesse asks “So I am slightly unclear what is exactly going on Sam?”

“Well, to be blunt, this may be the last year for Glee Club.” He says

“Wait. Again? Didn’t we deal with this like 10 years ago?” Kurt says as Blaine lightly taps him on the shoulder and mouths “Really”.

“ok, you two come on. Sam explains what’s going on.” Mercedes directs

“Alright. Mr. Schue called me to the office to state that the school district is forcing him to reallocate funds to be more academically friendly. We are down to one show choir team and that budget is cut in half” he clarifies.

“Wait when I coached, the superintendent said the principals were in charge of the budgets, how can they do that?” Rachel asked with some confusion.

“Yeah, Mr. Schue said the school hasn’t been performing well academically or competitively; except for the Cheerios. So he is being forced to cut funding for the lower-performing clubs and teams.” he summarizes with hesitation.

“So in the words of Principal Figgins, Mr. Schue’s ‘hands are tied,” Tina said using air quotes.

“Yeah.” Sam replied and continued with “Mr. Schue said to start over. So I held a meeting with all the teams and told them what was going on. That we are in a rebuilding phase for show choir now”

“How did it go?” Brittany asked.

“Honestly, not well. I only got eight kids to sign up. Show choir was falling already and now I fear it really plummeted. I need twelve to compete and if we don’t place at all Glee Club is over.” Sam stated.

“Come on Sam. If anyone can do this you can. You kept your entire family afloat when your dad lost his job.” Rachel says.

“Yeah, Sam. I know you can do this.” Blaine said.

“Rachel’s right Sam. The Glee Club has struggled with this scenario before. You’re just going to have to get creative with recruiting.” Kurt Says.

“Yeah, Sam. Remember we did that A-ha number in the cafeteria when Rachel coached.” Mercedes Said.

“Exactly. Just don’t fake blackmail someone like Mr. Schue did with Finn. Or stalk them in the showers of the locker room” Kitty mentioned.

“Wait. That really happened?” Jesse asked as everyone shook their heads yes in agreement.

“So I guess the big question is, how can we help you, Sam?” Mike chang chimed in.

“Yeah what do you need us to do?” Brittany asked.

“Well, I know everyone is busy. But I am hoping you guys can come to visit from time to time and help me, coach. Look I know it’s…” Sam gets cut off when Rachel starts to speak.

“Look, Sam. The rest of us talked before this Zoom meeting and we already decided that we would help you however you need. Glee Club helped us all. We will do whatever it takes to help save it.” She said with a smile. The rest of the group all stated “Yes” and shook their heads in agreement. Sam blinked his eyes as tears started to form and his smile grew large. “Alright, Alright, Alright. Let’s do this!”

End of Chapter 1.

Introduction: The idea of a Glee reboot has been discussed for some time.
